KANTHA SUZANI COVERS

The Kantha is a traditional Indian textile, made from layers of old cotton saris, carefully assembled and then hand-stitched using an ancient technique. Originally, these textiles were crafted to give a second life to worn-out saris, transformed into soft and durable blankets.

Each Indian Kantha thus comes from recycled saris, which explains the richness of colors, the layering of fabrics, and the natural variations unique to each piece. The hand-stitching work, visible through the irregular stitches, is the signature of true artisanal kantha.

In this collection, the Kanthas were then hand-embroidered.

It is this added embroidery that gives rise to what is called Kantha Suzani.

The term Suzani here refers to the decorative embroidery work, done manually on the base of the Kantha. It is not a different textile, but indeed Indian Kanthas made from old saris, then enriched with hand-sewn embroideries.

Each Kantha Suzani is a unique piece. The variations in colors, patterns, and embroidery stitches reflect the origin of the saris and the artisanal work, making each blanket singular and authentic.

These embroidered Kanthas can be used as blankets, throws, or bedspreads, and are sought after for their textile history, handmade character, and uniqueness.
